Core Systems
Description
Core systems are the essential components of your productivity system that help you organize and execute your work. Some of the core systems that Cal Newport recommends are:
- Daily and weekly planning: You review your tasks, projects, and goals, and allocate time and attention to them in a realistic and effective way.
- GTD task capture: You capture any tasks, ideas, or commitments that come to your mind, and store them in a trusted external system. You process your captured tasks regularly and assign them to appropriate categories.
- Deep work rituals: You follow some routines and rules to enter a state of deep work, which is the ability to focus intensely on a cognitively demanding task without distraction. You schedule blocks of time for deep work in your calendar, and then prepare your mind and environment for it.
- Exercise routines: You exercise regularly and consistently, and choose a type of exercise that suits your preferences, goals, and schedule. You use exercise as a way to enhance your creativity, productivity, and mood.
- Systems to track and review ideas: You have a system to capture and store your notes, such as a digital notebook or a physical journal. You also have a system to review and synthesize your notes, such as a spaced repetition software or a summary document.
